Gemena is the capital of the Sud-Ubangi Province in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . According to a calculation in 2010, the population of the city is 132,971. Gemena has a large national airport that connects the city with other locations within the country.
The mother of the late dictator Mobutu Sese Seko , Mama Yemo, died in Gemena in 1971, which is why a large mausoleum was built there in her honor .
In 2007 a Brigade of the Congolese Armed Forces ( FARDC ) was stationed in the place.
