Bunia is the capital of the Ituri province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , with an estimated 106,000 inhabitants (2009). Bunia is north of Mount Hoyo and west of Lake Albert . The Ituri River flows past Bunia about 20 kilometers south.
There is a small airfield ( ICAO code : FZKA).
The city is the center of the ethnic clashes between the Lendu and Hema tribes ( Ituri conflict ).
In 2003, EUFOR troops were deployed in the region in Bunia as part of Operation Artemis .
