Matadi is a port city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
General
Matadi is the capital of the Congo Central province , the population is 291,338 (2010) according to current calculations. The city is located on the left bank of the Congo , about halfway between the Atlantic and the capital of the Congo Kinshasa . The Congo is navigable inland up to this point, the border with Angola is a little south of the city.
Matadi is the seat of the Diocese of Matadi .
The place name means "stone" in the Kikongo language that is widespread here . The city was built on steep hills. In March 1887, Henry Morton made Stanley's expedition in search of Emin Pasha here on his way to the interior of Africa. The Congo Crisis began in the city on July 11, 1960 , when two warships of the Belgian Navy fired at positions of the Force Publique .
Infrastructure
- In 1898 the 366 km long railway to Kinshasa was completed (started by Ernest François Cambier ), and there is also a road connection between the two cities ( Route de Matadi ).
- A 722 m long road bridge has spanned the river since 1983. Originally called Pont Maréchal , it is now called Pont Matadi ( Matadi Bridge ). It connects Matadi with the city of Boma .
- The city's power supply is ensured by a power station on the M'pozo River, which flows into the Congo near Matadi.
- There's the small Tshimpi Airport (MAT) .
- Matadi is the main sea port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- The state fishing company PEMARZA uses the port, and Matadi is also an oil port.

- The "Rock of Diogo Cão ", named after the Portuguese explorer who explored the Congo to this point in 1482.
