Administrative division of Chad
The Republic of Chad became independent in 1960 and has since been divided into 14 prefectures, since 1999 into 28 departments and since 2002 into 18 regions. Since 2012, Chad has been divided into 23 regions. Before independence, Chad was divided into ten departments during the French colonial period between 1935 and 1947 and nine regions until 1960.

Since 2008
In 2008, Chad was divided into 22 regions. The Ennedi * region has been divided since September 4, 2012. Since then there have been 23 regions, this division is not taken into account in the numbers on the map and in the list.
2002 to 2008: 18 regions
The regions were created according to Décret n ° 419 / PR / MAT / 02 of October 17, 2002.
