Ouara (also Wara ) is a city in the Wadai (Ouaddaï) region in Chad .

history

From 1635 to 1870 Ouara was the capital of the Arab - Sudanese Empire Wadai , which was in what is now the Wadai region. Ouara is located 60 km northeast of the current capital, Abéché .

Due to a drought, the princes left the city in the 19th century, of which a mosque and the palace of Abdel-Kerim Ibn Djamé remain today. The bricks of this palace were made by an Egyptian architect in the 16th century. The palace is surrounded by a city wall with a diameter of 325 meters and comprised several buildings, the sultan's multi-story residence and apartments for his wives. The mosque is also made of bricks.

Chad has proposed these ruins as UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Department

Since 2002 Ouara has been one of four départements in the Wadai region. Ouara has six sub-prefectures : Abéché, Abougoudam, Abdi, Chokoyan, Bourtaïl and Amleyouna.
