Wadai ( Arabic وداي, French Ouaddaï ) is a region of Chad and corresponds to the former prefecture of the same name. Their capital is Abéché . The region has about 772,000 inhabitants.

Wadai covers an area of ​​76,240 km² and is located in the east of the country, on the border with the Darfur region in Sudan . The region is mainly located in the Sahel zone .

The departments of Sila and Djourf Al Ahmar were spun off in 2008 and became the new Sila region .

population

Most important population groups in Wadai are Maba (also known as Wadai), Zaghawa and Chadian Arabs.

Since the outbreak of the Darfur conflict , hundreds of thousands of Zaghawa, Fur and Masalit have fled Sudan to refugee camps in this region.
