The Fur ( Fur : fòòrà , Arabic فور, DMG for ) are a black African people in the region of Darfur in Sudan .

The livelihood of the sedentary fur is the cultivation of millet . Their society is very traditional and is led by village elders. They speak their own language, the Fur , which is one of the Nilo-Saharan languages , and adopted the Islamic faith several hundred years ago.

Originally the mountainous region around the Jebel Sî and the mountain Marra was settlement area of ​​the Fur, nowadays most of the Fur live in the lower lying lands to the west and southwest of this region. Some fur have also settled in Chad .

The lifestyle of the Fur led to clashes with the nomadic -lebenden Baggara to the fertile soil of Marra plateau . These clashes led, among other things, to the conflict in Darfur .
