Landscape in the Tibesti Mountains east of Bardaï

Tibesti ( Arabic منطقة تيبستي, DMG Minṭaqa Tibastī ) is a region of Chad . Its capital is Bardaï . The region has about 22,000 inhabitants (2009). It was created on February 19, 2008 by outsourcing from the former Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti region. Alifa Weddeye has been the governor of the Tibesti region since 2013 .

Bardaï is in the north of the country. The climate is dry and hot ( desert climate ). The region is located in the Sahara , about half of which is in the Tibesti Mountains, the highest mountain range in the Sahara.

Another city besides Bardaï is Zouar .

Tibesti is divided into two departments ( départements ):

The western department has 6,986 inhabitants, the eastern 14,984 (as of September 2009). The region is further subdivided into 18 cantons , eight municipalities and one communauté rurale .

Mainly Tubu (Daza and Teda) and Chadian Arabs live in the region .
