Mao (Arabic: مؤ) is a city in Chad with around 50,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the Kanem region . The city is located 226 kilometers north of N'Djamena , the capital of Chad.

Mao lies on the border with the Sahara , which means that there is hardly any vegetation and the landscape is characterized by sand dunes .

history

On July 18, 2010, the Sultan of Kanem, Alifa Ali Zezerti, died in the hospital in N'Djamena at the age of 83 due to a heart attack . He was the 39th ruler of the Kanem dynasty and had ruled since 1947. He was buried in Mao. His predecessor, Sultan Zezerti, died on September 26, 1947. He had ruled since 1925. His son was elected as sultan without competition.

In October 2013, rioting against the Idriss Déby government broke out in Mao's main market after a civilian was shot dead by an officer near Déby.

At around 8 p.m. on September 30, 2015, a large fire burned in Mao's main market. The origin could not be determined. No deaths were reported. At 5 a.m. on May 12, 2016, another big fire spread across the main Mao market. The fire had started in a nearby gas station. People were not harmed.

With its population, Mao was ranked 14th on the list of cities in Chad in 2009 .

Religions

Mainly Muslims live in Mao . There is also a Catholic and a Protestant church in the city .

politics

As in all Chadian is Mao both a traditional regions Sultan ruled as well as government officials. The Sultan of Kanem, who lives in Mao, is the traditional chief of the Kanembou people . Decentralization movements have been disrupted by the complex and sometimes strained relationships between traditional rulers in Chad and national authorities.

Traveling is difficult due to Mao's location. The streets consist entirely of sand. The main means of transportation here is still the camel .

In the vicinity of the place is the Mao airport with an asphalt runway.

economy

On Wednesdays, Grand Market Day , fresh fruit and vegetables are sold to the city's residents.
