The island of São Tomé ( German  Sankt Thomas ) in the Gulf of Guinea is part of the African state of São Tomé and Príncipe . The city of the same name São Tomé is the capital of the state.

The striking Pico Cão Grande in the south of the island is a remnant of a volcanic vent that was first ascented in 1975

The island lies in front of Africa in the Atlantic. The island is 240 km away from the Gabonese port city of Port-Gentil on the African mainland. Its southern tip is 2 km north of the equator . About 1 km south is the 3 km² small island of Rolas , which is cut by the equator. The soils are very fertile, the entire island consists of extinct volcanoes. The island's main crop is cocoa , which makes up a large part of the state's export revenues. In addition, around 2,000 tourists visit the island each year. TAP Portugal flies four times per week from Lisbon to São Tomé airport to.

The peak of Pico de São Tomé , which reaches 2024  m , is the highest mountain in the country.

São Tomé is about 48 km long and up to 32 km wide. The state capital São Tomé is on the northeast coast and the port city of Porto Alegre is on the south coast . The city of Santa Cruz is in the southeast. A ring road connects the coastal towns with each other.

The island's discoverer is considered to be the Portuguese navigator João de Santarém , who sailed on behalf of the merchant Fernão Gomes , who had acquired the right from the Portuguese King Alfonso V to explore 100 leguas of the African coast annually at his own expense in the name of the Portuguese crown. He discovered São Tomé on December 21, 1471.

The island of São Tomé and its offshore islands are divided into six districts ( Água Grande , Cantagalo , Caué , Lembá , Lobata and Mé-Zóchi ).

19 bird taxa are endemic to São Tomé , including the brownling , the Newton shrike , the Sao-Tomé thrush , the Sao-Tomé green pigeon , the steel paradise flycatcher , the Sao-Tomé dwarf fisherman , the long-tailed olive pigeon , the hard-leaved scops owl that São Tomé Barn Owl , the Sao-Tome-Prinie , the São Tomé grosbeak , the giant sunbird and the São Tomé Ibis . Endemic mammals are the shrew Crocidura thomensis and the bat species Hipposideros thomensis , Miniopterus newtoni , São Tomé- ruffed bat ( Myonycteris brachycephala ) and Chaerephon tomensis . One of the endemic molluscs is Crassispira sacerdotalis from the family of slug snails . The endemic plant taxa include Afrocarpus mannii , Angraecum doratophyllum , Anisophyllea cabole , Balthasaria mannii and Bulbophyllum lizae .
