Institut français du Proche-Orient

The Institut français du Proche-Orient ( IFPO ; "French Institute for the Middle East") is a French research institute with offices in Damascus ( Syria ), Beirut ( Lebanon ) and Amman ( Jordan ).

history

The institute emerged on January 1st, 2003 from the merger of three institutes:

  • of the Institut français d'études arabes de Damas (IFEAD, founded 1922)
  • of the Institut français d'archéologie du Proche-Orient (IFAPO, founded 1946)
  • des Center d'études et de recherches sur le Moyen-Orient contemporain (CERMOC, founded in 1977)

Publications

It publishes the Publications de l'Institut français du Proche-Orient , which appear in the Presses de l'Ifpo , as well as the Bulletin d'études orientales (al-Maʿhad al-Firansī li-š-Šarq al-Ausaṭ) (Institute Français, Damascus, 1931-, initially: Le Caire) and the Bibliothèque archéologique et historique (BAH) (Beyrouth: IFPO, 1921-, initially: Paris: Geuthner , earlier: Beyrouth: IFAP0, 1.1921 -).
