Jean-Louis Méchali

Jean-Louis Méchali (born May 11, 1947 in Casablanca ) is a French jazz musician ( drums , percussion , vibraphone , marimba , composition) and music producer .

Méchali completed a classical training as a percussionist and then founded the politically motivated Cohelmec Ensemble with his younger brother, the bassist François Mechali , with which he released several albums and took part in Antoine Duhamel's youth opera Les travaux d'Hercule (1981). He published several recordings under his own name. He also appeared in the New School Ensemble (TV recording 1971), in the Septet Machi Oul by Manuel Villarroel (and the Machi Oul Big Band ) and in the trio by Mico Nissim . Since the 1980s he has concentrated on composing and performing theater music. In 2001 he co-founded the Compagnie Lutherie Urbaine , which focuses on contemporary music theater and instrument making ; he is their artistic director. He can also be heard on albums by Claudine François , Les Urbs and the Henri Roger Trio.
