Mat Maneri

Mat Maneri (born October 4, 1969 in Brooklyn / New York City ) is an American composer and jazz violinist and violist.

Live and act

Maneri began playing the violin at the age of five and performed with his father Joe Maneri at the age of seven . He took private lessons from founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet , Robert Koff , and from bassist Miroslav Vitouš . After attending Walnut Hill High School , he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music .

In 1990 he founded the Mat Maneri Quartet with Randy Peterson , later he also worked with various trio formations. From 1996 he released albums as a band leader. He also worked with the Joe Morris Quartet and recorded several albums, including the ECM album Three Men Walking (1995) with his father. As a sideman he appeared with the pianists Paul Bley , Cecil Taylor , Guerino Mazzola , Marilyn Crispell , Matthew Shipp ( By the Law of Music 1996) and Borah Bergman , with the bassists Ed Schuller , Mark Dresser , William Parker , Michael Formanek , Barre Phillips , Joëlle Léandre and John Lockwood , also with John Medeski , Tim Berne , Cecil McBee , TK Ramakrishnan , Franz Koglmann and Roy Campbell .

Maneri has taught at the New England Conservatory and gives workshops in North America and Europe. His CD Pentagon was nominated for a Grammy in 2006 in the category Best Alternative Music Album .
