Daniel Levin

Daniel Levin (* 1974 in Burlington , Vermont ) is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( cello ) and composer .

Levin began learning the cello at the age of six; During his school days he also played the alto and tenor saxophone. At the age of 15 he took classes at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick , Massachusetts, and then studied with Paul Tobias at Mannes College of Music in New York. After a year he moved to the New England Conservatory of Music , where he studied with Joe Maneri , Joe Morris , Hankus Netksy and John McNeil (graduated in 2001), interrupted by several tours. In 2003 he presented his debut album Don't Go It Alone (Riti), on which Dave Ballou (cornet), Matt Moran (vibraphone) and Joe Morris (bass) participated and which received positive feedback in the specialist press; further solo, trio and quartet productions followed with Clead Feed and HatHut Records . He also worked a. a. with Billy Bang , Borah Bergman , Tim Berne , Anthony Braxton , Rob Brown , Gerald Cleaver , Andrew Cyrille , Mark Dresser , Masashi Harada , Tony Malaby , Joe Morris, Joe McPhee , William Parker , Warren Smith and Ken Vandermark . In 2010 Levin received the Jerome Foundation Award . In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1999 and 2011, including a. also with Joe Giardullo , Michael Marcus , Steve Swell , Scott Fields , François Grillot and Jason Kao Hwang . Currently (2014) he works a. a. in New York with Russ Lossing , Jim Hobbs , Mat Maneri , Tanya Kalmanovitch and Viv Corringham , in Chicago with Jim Baker and Frank Rosaly .

Daniel Levin combines elements of European classical music, American jazz, microanal and new music as well as European improvisation music in his compositions . The critic John Sharpe noted in The New York City Jazz Record about Levin: “He activates all kinds of music with amazing skill: jazz, classical, improvisation , noise , vocal choruses. His technique is undisputed and he delights in the physicality of the instrument. "
