Robert "Rob" Brown (* 27. February 1962 in Hampton , Virginia ) is an American alto saxophonist of free jazz .

Life

Rob Brown came to New York in 1984 and began his career under the influence of the music of Albert Ayler and Jimmy Lyons and adopted their overblowing techniques; he then worked with Matthew Shipp , Whit Dickey and William Parker in the late 1980s ( Points , 1990). In 1989 he recorded a first album under his own name for Silkheart Records , Breath Rhyme , with William Parker and Dennis Charles ; In 1992 the trio album Youniverse with Joe Morris and Whit Dickey followed on Riti Records . In 1996 he recorded two longer duets with Matthew Shipp ( Blink of an Eye ), but also the trio album High Wire with William Parker and Jackson Krall . In 1997, CIMP made a quartet with Assif Tsahar , Lou Grassi and Chris Lightcap , creating the somewhat more conservative - according to critics Cook & Morton - production Scratching the Surface . In 1999 Brown worked on Assif Tsahar's album The Hollow World ; he also played in Alan Silva's Sound Visions Orchestra (1999). In 2000 he worked on William Parker's album O'Neill's Porch ; this in turn played with Warren Smith on Brown's album Round the Bend , which was created in May 2001. In 2008 he released the album Crown Trunk Root Funk on AUM Fidelity , and in 2018 a duo album with drummer Juan P. Carletti . The quartet album From Here to Hear followed in 2019 at RogueArt . He can also be heard on Whit Dickey's trio album Expanding Light (2020).

Brown has also worked with Rashied Ali , Billy Bang , Tim Berne , Borah Bergman , Anthony Braxton , Mark Dresser , Grachan Moncur III , Butch Morris , Reggie Workman , Henry Grimes , Roy Campbell , Hamid Drake and Fred Hopkins throughout his career . He also collaborated with various dance ensembles, poets and performance artists.
