William Parker (born January 10, 1952 in Bronx , New York City ) is an American jazz bassist.

Live and act

Parker, who, unlike other double bass players of his generation, has no formal training on the instrument, took lessons from Jimmy Garrison , Richard Davis and Wilbur Ware . As someone who regularly plays with the bow, even beyond solos, he is an exception among the bassists of the free jazz and improvisation scene of his generation.

Parker, who has been making music since the early 1970s, has attracted international attention since the early 1990s, primarily in Cecil Taylor's bands . He has also played with David S. Ware's quartet and in various groups run by Peter Brötzmann . He is also with musicians like Matthew Shipp ( By the Law of Music 1996, Good and Evil Sessions , 2003), Hamid Drake , Bill Dixon , Charles Gayle , Roscoe Mitchell , Butch Morris , Frank Lowe , Billy Bang , Fred Anderson , Derek Bailey , Tony Oxley , Rashied Ali , Sunny Murray , Rozanne Levine , Perry Robinson , Henry Grimes , Jeanne Lee , Ivo Perelman , Kidd Jordan , DJ Spooky and Mat Maneri . Together with bassists Barre Phillips , Tetsu Saitoh and Joëlle Léandre , he recorded the album After You've Gone in memory of Peter Kowald . The album Sound Unity , recorded with his regular quartet, was voted one of the Top 100 Editor's Picks by Amazon.com in 2005 .

He is a member of the musicians' cooperative Other Dimensions in Music . Together with his wife, the dancer Patricia Nicholson , he founded the Vision Festival in New York and made it an important event.

In March 2007 Parker's book who owns music? published by the Cologne publisher buddy's knife jazzedition ; who owns music? brings together his political thoughts, his music-theoretical essays and his poems.

Together with Roy Campbell , Joe McPhee and Warren Smith he plays in the project A Tribute to Albert Ayler .
