history

The publishing house buddy's knife jazzedition was founded in 2007 by the Cologne journalist , editor and ethnologist Renate Da Rin and named after the cornetist Buddy Bolden .

The previous publications of the jazz edition for free jazz / avant-garde jazz and improvising music were written by musicians from the New York downtown scene and were published in English. The respective forewords have been translated into German.

The publisher was the first to publish selected poetic works by the American jazz bassist Henry Grimes from his 30-year absence from the stage. The book signs along the road shows a selection from the thousands of diary pages that Henry Grimes filled during this period. At the same time, the book who owns music? Was published in March 2007 . by William Parker with poems and political and music theory essays.

In March 2009, subway moon by saxophonist Roy Nathanson , a former member of Lounge Lizards and founder of Jazz Passengers, was released . Nathanson writes how he composes: always close to what is happening around him.

Naming

The name buddy's knife goes back to the legendary trumpeter Buddy Bolden from New Orleans . buddy's knife emphasizes the knife as an instrument with which shackles can be cut, so it is symbolic for the loosening of conventions and for the freedom in musical improvisation .
