Sabir Mateen
Sabir Mateen (born April 16, 1951 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist.
Mateen made his first recordings in 1980 with Horace Tapscott's Pan African People's Arkestra . In 1989 he returned to New York, where he released the duo album Getting Away With Murder , a live recording of a performance in New York's Grand Central Terminal , in 1995 with drummer Tom Bruno . He then belonged to Bruno's Quartet Test, alongside Matt Heyner and Daniel Carter , and became known for his appearances in the New York subway system.
He was also a member of the Raphe Malik Quartet and the One World Ensemble and formed the trio Tenor Rising, Drums Expanding with Daniel Carter and David Nuss . In 1997 he played the album Divine Mad Love with his own trio (with John Voigt and Lawrence Cook ) .
In the following years Mateen recorded duo albums with Sunny Murray , Hamid Drake and Ben Karetnick . In 2001 the album Secrets of When followed with The Sabir Mateen Quintet . As a sideman he worked a. a. with Cecil Taylor , William Parker , Alan Silva , Butch and Wilber Morris , Steve Swell , Mark Whitecage , Roy Campbell , Matthew Shipp ( ur Lady of the Flowers , 2015), Marc Edwards , Jemeel Moondoc , William Hooker , Henry Grimes , Rashid Bakr and Kali Fasteau .
