John Voigt

John Voigt (born June 26, 1939 in Boston ) is an American jazz researcher , composer and jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass , spoken word), who is primarily active in the music scene in his hometown.

Life

Voigt studied English at Boston State College (bachelor's degree in 1968) to get his master's degree in library science from Simmons College in 1972 . He then worked as a librarian and published several volumes of the Jazz Music bibliography in print between 1975 and 1984 . As a composer, he published several avant-garde works on the album Music for Contrabass Quintet in 1978 . He later played with musicians such as Billy Bang , Joey Baron , Peter Brötzmann , Bill Dixon , Bill Frisell , Malcolm Goldstein , Joseph Jarman , Keith Jarrett and Jeanne Lee . In 1993 he published the album Outsider Bass under his own name , which Bertram Turetzky praised as an innovative work by a composer shaped by Charles Ives . He also worked a. a. with John McPhee , Jemeel Moondoc ( Tri-P-Let 1996), Paul Flaherty ( The Ilya Tree 1999), Sabir Mateen , Joe Morris ( MVP LSD ), Eric Zinman and in the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra . Between 1980 and 2009 Voigt participated in 22 recording sessions in the field of jazz. In both 1997 and 2001 he performed at the New York Vision Festival .

Voigt wrote several essays on music (including Henry Grimes , Charles Mingus , Don Cherry , Morton Feldman ); he was on the advisory board of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University . He also taught at conservatories and universities in the Boston area, where he worked with his own formations.

The musician is not to be confused with the actor Jon Voight .
