Eric Zinman

Eric Zinman (born May 22, 1963 in Boston ) is an American pianist and composer specializing in free jazz and new improvisation music .

Zinman grew up in Boston and took piano lessons as a child. He attended Bennington College, where he had lessons from Bill Dixon in the early 1980s , who helped him get into jazz. He continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music , where he took classes with Ran Blake , Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell and obtained his Masters in 1985. He had already met Glenn Spearman and Marc Leibowitz during his studies . He initially worked mostly in the Boston jazz scene, a. a. with Rashid Bakr , Karen Borca , Dennis Charles , Joe Maneri , Sabir Mateen , William Parker and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky . In 2005, Zinman founded the trio New Language Collaborative with cellist Glynis Loman and percussionist Syd Smart . In 2006 he presented his first album under his own name on Cadence Jazz . Other albums followed in changing line-ups. a. with Benjamin Duboc , Mario Rechtern , Laurence Cook and Blaise Siwula . Zinman has also composed music for dance and theater ensembles and has worked with visual artists and poets.
