Laurence Cook

Laurence Cook (* 8. June 1939 in Boston ) is an American jazz - drummer and percussionist .

Career

Laurence Cook first studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before turning to music and learning piano , vibraphone and drums. He moved to New York in the early 1960s and worked full-time as a dock worker. He was also active in the free jazz scene in New York. a. he worked on recordings for Paul Bley ( Revenge and Dual Unity ), Alan Silva ( Skillfullnes ) and Joe Morris ( Wraparound ). In the 1970s he returned to Boston; He also played with Lowell Davidson , Thurston Moore , Jemeel Moondoc , Sabir Mateen , Bill Dixon ( November 1981 and Thoughts , 1985), Sam Rivers , Rahn Burton , Michael and Randy Brecker , Robin Kenyatta , Mark Whitecage , Paul Flaherty , Barre Phillips and Daniel Carter / Peter Kowald ( Principle Hope ). Cook was a member of the musicians' ensemble Poum - Composers Collektiv around Perry Robinson and John Fischer in the mid-1970s . From the 1980s he was mainly active in the Boston area and worked for two decades with the pianist Eric Zinman , with whom he a. a. recorded the duo album Double Action for Ayler Records. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts .

The drummer should not be confused with the pianist J. Lawrence Cook (1899–1976).
