Mark Whitecage
Mark Whitecage (born June 4, 1937 in Litchfield (Connecticut) ) is an American saxophonist (soprano and alto saxophone) and clarinetist (alto clarinet) of free and creative jazz , free improvisation and contemporary music.
Act
Mark Whitecage played in his father's band from an early age. In the 1970s he worked with John Fischer , Bobby Naughton and Wadada Leo Smith . He became known in Europe in the 1980s through his participation in Gunter Hampel's Galaxy Dream Band , in which he worked on albums such as All the Things You Could be If Charles Mingus Was Your Daddy from 1978/1980 or the live album Fresh Heat from 1985. He also played with Jeanne Lee , Steve Swell and Saheb Sarbib during this time . With clarinetists Perry Robinson and Mike Morgensternhe played in the Licorice Factory . After a European tour in 1986 he took over two bands as director, Liquid Time and Glass House Ensemble . In the 1990s worked with the Improvisers Collective and released a number of albums on the independent avant-garde label CIMP , on which musicians such as Dominic Duval , Jay Rosen and Tomas Ulrich participated. Whitecage also took part in 1996 (as a soloist on the soprano saxophone) on the opera "Trillium R: Shala Fears For The Poor" by Anthony Braxton . He was also involved in recordings of William Parker , Joe Fonda , Dominic Duval and Joe McPhee . Around 2000 he was a member of The Nu Band , which also included trumpeter Roy Campbell , bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Lou Grassi . Whitecage is married to the clarinetist Rozanne Levine , with whom he will perform the work "Bushwacked" based on words of George W. Bush and newspaper reports (CD 2005); they continue to perform with Perry Robinson in a trio called Crystal Clarinets .
