Joe Fonda (born December 16, 1954 in Amsterdam / New York ) is an American jazz bassist.

Live and act

Fonda, who comes from a family of musicians, initially played the guitar and studied bass at the Berklee School of Music in the early 1970s . After completing his training, he released his first album as the band leader Looking for the Lake .

In the 1980s he performed in the New Haven region and was (1982-85) as a bass player and dancer with the Sonomama Dance Company . In 1983 he recorded the album Procession of the Great Ancestry with Wadada Leo Smith , whose Creative Musicians' Improvisers Forum and Orchestra he was a member from 1979 to 1985.

From 1984 to 1999 Fonda was a member of various Anthony Braxton bands . From 1994 to 1999 he was on the board (since 1997 chairman) of the Tri-Centric Foundation and a member of the Tri-Centric Orchestra led by Braxton . He also played bass at the premiere of Braxton's opera Shalla Fears for the Poor in New York in 1996.

With Michael Jefry Stevens , Fonda led the Fonda Stevens Group from 1992 , a quartet or quintet formation, which, expanded by the dancer Brenda Bufolino and the singer Vicki Dodd, recorded the album From the Source . He also led his own quintet, the collaborative quartet Conference Call (with Gebhard Ullmann , Michael Jefry Stevens and changing drummers, including Han Bennink , from 1999) and performed in a duo with the Guzheng player Xu Fengxia . He founded the FAB Trio with Barry Altschul and Billy Bang . In Germany, Fonda also plays with Patrick Bebelaar and Herbert Joos .

As a sideman, Fonda u. a. with Archie Shepp , Ken McIntyre , Lou Donaldson , Bill and Kenny Barron , Perry Robinson , Dave Douglas , Curtis Fuller , Mark Whitecage , Marion Brown and Bill Dixon .
