Chris Jonas

Christopher "Chris" Jonas (* 1966 in Laguna Beach (California) ) is an American soprano saxophonist and composer of the Modern Creative .

Jonas played the saxophone in high school, presented his first compositions, painted and also engaged in creative writing. From 1984 he studied art history and music at Oberlin College , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1988. After moving to San Francisco, he initially worked as a visual artist before switching to music. In 1991 he moved to New York City and studied at Mannes College of Music with Robert Cuckson. He also worked in William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and with Cecil Taylor , from 1997 in Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Foundation . He has also played with Joe Fonda ( Full Circle Suite ) and Assif Tsahar since the 1990s . From the end of the decade he also directed his own ensembles, for which he wrote his own compositions. Jonas directs the Brooklyn Creative Orchestra and the Cleveland Creative Orchestra .

In 1999 Jonas graduated from Wesleyan University with a Masters in World Music / Composition; He has taught Music and Media at Wesleyan University, the College of Santa Fe, and the New Media Arts Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts at Santa Fe.

With Molly Sturges, Jonas received the United States Artists Award in 2008 in the “Music and Media” category.
