The name refers to the Alsatian pastor Johann Friedrich Oberlin , who was active in social reform . The college is privately run. The most popular subjects are English studies , history and biology . The Oberlin Conservatory , which enjoys an excellent reputation, also belongs to the university . Oberlin is considered one of the best American art academies and is particularly known for its liberality.

Oberlin College was a pioneer in co-education , committed to it in 1834. It has been accepting white and African American students on an equal footing since 1835, when it was the first higher education institute in the USA . It was one of the "hotbeds" of abolitionism , a holding station (no. 99) was the Underground Railroad and 1858 involved in a spectacular rescue of a runaway slave (Fugitive Slave had at that time even in states where there is no slavery was, picked up and handed over to their “owners”).

The college's art rental program is famous: for a fee of US $ 5 per semester, students can hang works by famous artists such as Warhol , Dalí , and Picasso on their walls. This program was launched in 1940 by the art professor Ellen Johnson, "in order to develop the aesthetic sensitivity of the students and to promote orderly thinking and discernment in other areas of life as well."

In December 1965, the college was granted National Historic Landmark status. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since October 1966 .
