Julie Taymor (born December 15, 1952 in Newton , Massachusetts ) is an American director .

Life

Julie Taymor comes from a Jewish family. She is the daughter of a political science teacher and a gynecologist. As a 15-year-old she took part in theater workshops in Boston and studied with Jacques Lecoq in Paris before she was 18 . She then attended Oberlin College in Oberlin (Ohio) from 1970 . After graduating from college, she went to the Japanese island of Awaji-shima to study to expand her knowledge of experimental and visual theater.

Taymor's breakthrough as a theater artist on Broadway came with the world premiere of the musical The Lion King in 1997. She received a Tony Award for both her production and costumes, and in 1989 she received the Critics' Circle Theater Award . In 2010 she directed rehearsals for the musical adaptation of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway, but not the premiere on June 14, 2011.

As a film director, she achieved international attention through her Shakespeare adaptation Titus with Anthony Hopkins in the title role. In 2005 she staged Mozart's Die Zauberflöte for the Metropolitan Opera .

Julie Taymor has been in a relationship with the composer Elliot Goldenthal for more than 20 years .

In 1991 she was a MacArthur Fellow .
