Newton is a city in Middlesex County in the US state of Massachusetts in the United States. At the 2000 census it had 83,829 inhabitants. It is located west of Boston and is mostly used as a residential area.
geography
The city is bordered to the north by Waltham and Watertown , to the east by Brookline and Boston, to the south by Needham and to the west by Wellesley and Weston .
history
Newton was settled in 1630 as part of Newetowne , which was renamed Cambridge in 1638 . In 1688 it became a separate town called Cambridge Village . In 1691 it was renamed Newtown and finally Newton in 1766. Newton received the legal status of a town in 1873.
Demographics
According to the United States Census 2000 , 83,829 residents lived in 31,201 households and 20,499 families. The population was composed of 88.07% white, 7.68% Asian and 1.97% black. Hispanics or Latinos made up 2.52% of the population. The per capita income was $ 45,708 and 2.1% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line .
