Donald S. Harrington

Donald Szantho Harrington (born July 11, 1914 in Newton , Massachusetts , † September 16, 2005 in Romania ) was an American Unitarian pastor and liberal politician .

Harrington served on the last Board of Trustees for the American Unitarian Association prior to its merger with the Universalists; after the merger, he served on the first board of the Unitarian Universalist Association . He was also the pastor of the Community Church of New York , the largest Unitarian church in the United States.

Harrington was politically active as a supporter of Norman Thomas initially in the Socialist Party . Later, after moving to New York , he joined the Liberal Party of New York and rose to become chairman of the state. He held this post for 20 years. In 1966 he ran alongside Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. for the office of Lieutenant Governor of New York. They achieved 507,234 votes, which corresponded to a share of 8.4 percent and brought them fourth place; victorious was the Republican Nelson Rockefeller . In the same election, Harrington was elected as a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention.
