Lowell is a city in Middlesex County in the US state of Massachusetts in the United States . In 2010 the population was 106,519.

history

The urban area was originally settled by Pennacook Indians. In 1820 it had barely 200 inhabitants. The first spinning mill was opened in 1823, and Lowell was officially recognized as a town in 1836. The city is named after Francis Cabot Lowell . By 1900 Lowell was considered the American Manchester . In 1900 it produced goods for $ 44,774,525 in 981 factories with 31,377 workers, mainly cotton fabrics (8 factories, 13,730 workers, US $ 17,038,576), hosiery (8 factories, 4,165 workers, US $ 3,148,110) ), Woolen goods (5 factories, 1,573 workers, US $ 3,275,613), machinery and cast goods (47 factories, 2,938 workers, US $ 4,258,047). Lowell was also the seat of the Lowell Textile School and a teachers' college. The University of Lowell, the state University of Massachusetts Lowell , emerged in 1975 from these precursors.

The textile industry lost its importance in Lowell as early as the 1930s, which resulted in the town's economic decline. In the 1980s there was a temporary economic boom (the Massachusetts Miracle ). Lowell was also the seat of the global headquarters of Konarka Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of thin film solar cells made from polymers . The Konarka core team came together in 2000 at the instigation of the US Army to develop photovoltaic products for soldiers. In 2001 Konarka was able to start as a commercial company and has since founded three offices in Europe. In 2012 this company also went bankrupt.

From April 1 to 9, 2006, the Men's Curling World Championships took place in Lowell .

The most famous sports club in town were the Lowell Devils (until 2005/06 Lowell Lock Monsters ) from the ( AHL ).

The Lowell Spinners baseball club plays semi-professionally in the Class A short season of minor league baseball as a farm team for the Boston Red Sox .
