The University of Massachusetts Lowell (short UMass Lowell or UML ) is a state university in Lowell in the US state of Massachusetts and one of five campuses of the University System University of Massachusetts . She is known for her specialization in management . In autumn 2009 around 13,600 students were enrolled.

The Center for Atmospheric Research constructs ion probe models from the popular “Digisonde” series and coordinates a worldwide network of interconnected ion probes.

history

The college was founded in 1975 following the merger of the Lowell Technological Institute and Lowell State College . These two predecessor institutes were named Lowell Textile School , resp. Founded in 1894 as Lowell Normal School . From 1975 to 1991 the university was still called the University of Lowell and only then took on its current name.

In June 2010, construction began on the new Emerging Technologies Innovation Center , the first academic building to be built on campus in 30 years. It will cost around $ 70 million to build, half of which will be borne by the state.

Sports

Tsongas Arena

The University of Massachusetts Lowell sports teams are the River Hawks . The college is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The men's ice hockey team plays in Division I of the Hockey East university league and plays its home games in the Tsongas Center . In 1979, 1981 and 1982 they were able to win the NCAA championship in Division II three times. In other sports, the university teams play in Division II. The men's basketball team also won the national championship in 1988, the men's cross-country team in 1991 and the field hockey team in 2005.
