Connor Charles Hellebuyck (born May 19, 1993 in Commerce , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League since 2014 .
Career
Hellebuyck began his career in Oakland County's local junior leagues before joining the Odessa Jackalopes in the North American Hockey League . There he recorded the third best catch quota in the league in his debut season , with the most appearances among all goalkeepers. At the end of the season, Hellebuyck was named the best goalkeeper and rookie of the year. In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , the Winnipeg Jets selected the American in the fifth round in 130th place.
Then Hellebuyck moved to the University of Massachusetts Lowell , where he played for the local ice hockey team in the Hockey East division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He established himself as a regular goalkeeper in his first season and, after winning the title in the regular season, also led his team in the play-offs to the division championship. Its 95.2% catch rate was also the best in the entire NCAA. In the following 2013/14 season, Hellebuyck was able to build on these successes and, in addition to being appointed to the All-American team, received the first Mike Richter Award as the best goalkeeper of the NCAA. In both seasons he was also voted the most valuable player in the play-off tournament in his division.
In April 2014 Connor Hellebuyck signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets and made his professional debut for their farm team, the St. John's IceCaps , in the American Hockey League (AHL) in the 2014/15 season . As a regular goalkeeper before Peter Budaj , he was used in 58 games for the Ice Caps, of which he won 28 with the team.
After Hellebuyck had already been used in roughly equal parts in the AHL and NHL in the 2015/16 season, he established himself as the regular goalkeeper of the Winnipeg Jets at the beginning of the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 game year he led the entire league (alongside Andrei Wassilewski ) with 44 wins and was consequently announced with Wassilewski and Pekka Rinne as one of three finalists for the Vezina Trophy , which Rinne subsequently received. He also set a new franchise record with these 44 wins and was called to the NHL Second All-Star Team . He then signed a new six-year contract in Winnipeg in July 2018 for a total salary of $ 37 million.
International
Hellebuyck was appointed to the squad of the US national team for the first time at the 2014 World Cup , but did not appear there as the third goalkeeper behind Tim Thomas and David Leggio . In the following year he was able to win the starting place in the goal of the Americans and led the team with a catch rate of 94.8% from eight games to win the bronze medal. Among other things, he managed a shutout in the game for third place with a total of 39 shots blocked . Hellebuyck was then elected to the All-Star Team of the tournament. In late summer 2016 he took part in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 with the North America team, a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA . Behind John Gibson and Matt Murray , he was again without service time.
