In the run-up to the NHL All-Star Games, four teams were formed, each consisting of players from one division. First, a player from each division was selected by means of a fan vote, who also functions as team captain. In this vote, David Pastrňák , Alexander Ovetschkin , Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid prevailed, with Alexander Ovetschkin announcing just a few days later that, as in the previous year, he would not participate in the All-Star Game. In addition, the “Last Man In” vote, which was introduced last year, was continued, in which the fans could choose another, “last” player per division for the All-Star Game. In this election, Mitchell Marner , TJ Oshie , David Perron and Quinn Hughes received the most votes from the fans, while the other participating actors were announced by the NHL on December 30th. As a result, each division provided an eleven-man squad, each of the 31 franchises should be represented by at least one actor; In the end, Arizona and Anaheim did not provide a player due to injury. The coaches who and their teams had the best point average in the respective division (deadline January 2, 2020) were automatically nominated as team bosses. Since Gerard Gallant was sacked by the Vegas Golden Knights in the meantime, Rick Tocchet moved to the Arizona Coyotes in the Pacific Division.
As in the previous year, the respective divisions of a conference competed against each other in the two semifinals and thus determined the two finalists. Each of the three games was played in 3-on-3 mode over 20 minutes each.
As in the previous events, the NHL All-Star Skills Competition was held this year on the day before the actual All-Star Game , in which the players competed against each other in individual competitions. In addition, a 3-on-3 game for women was played for the first time on the same day, in which the all-stars of the national teams of Canada and the United States faced each other. In this encounter Canada prevailed 2-1. The players were nominated as follows:
