Jordan Binnington (born July 11, 1993 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League since May 2012 and has been playing for them regularly since January 2019. With the team he won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . Before that he was mainly active for their farm teams in the American Hockey League .

Career

Binnington spent his junior career with the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League , for which he was active for a total of four seasons between 2009 and 2013. There the goalkeeper was in his first year the substitute behind Scott Stajcer , but he replaced him in the following season as number 1 and led the team to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHL championship trophy , for the first time . In the subsequent Memorial Cup he was also awarded the Hap Emms Memorial Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the prestigious tournament and was appointed to the All-Star Team. During the summer break, the Canadian was selected in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 88th position by the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League . He was the sixth goalkeeper who had been selected as part of the draft by a team. Binnington stayed with the attack for two more seasons, even though he was signed by the Blues in May 2012. At the end of his final OHL year, he received the OHL Goaltender of the Year award , was named to the First All-Star team and, together with his teammate Brandon Hope , shared the Dave Pinkney Trophy for the lowest average goal conceded among all goalkeepers in the league .

After the goalkeeper had already played a game for St. Louis' farm team in the American Hockey League , the Peoria Rivermen , during the 2011/12 season, he joined the Kalamazoo for their cooperation partner in the ECHL at the beginning of the 2013/14 season Wings in action. With his achievements, he recommended himself for the following season for a place in the squad of the Chicago Wolves from the AHL, which had now entered into a cooperation with the Blues in this league. In the first of three years playing with the Wolves, he first formed a goalkeeping duo with Matt Climie , then with Pheonix Copley and in the third year also with Ville Husso . During the three years in Chicago, Binnington also made his debut in the NHL for St. Louis in the 2015/16 season . However, it remained with a 13-minute short deployment.

With the sale of the farm team in Chicago to the Vegas Golden Knights , Binnington came on loan for the Providence Bruins in the AHL in the 2017/18 season and was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic . He spent the beginning of the 2018/19 season in St. Louis' new cooperation partner, the San Antonio Rampage . In January 2019 he was back in goal for the first time in almost exactly three years after Chad Johnson moved to the Anaheim Ducks . There he was initially scheduled as a substitute for Jake Allen , but secured the role of starter after only a few missions. As a result, Binnington showed outstanding performance, among other things, he won nine games in a row and recorded five shutouts in just 18 games by the end of February, so that he was honored as NHL rookie of the month . He received this honor again the following month. Ultimately, at the end of the 2019 playoffs , he won the Stanley Cup with the team, to which he played a major role with his performance. At the same time, he became the first rookie goalkeeper to bring in all 16 required victories of his team, and was considered in the NHL All-Rookie Team . The Canadian then signed a new two-year contract in St. Louis in July 2019, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.4 million.

International

For his home country, Binnington took part with the Canadian U20 national team at the U20 World Junior Championship 2013 in Ufa , Russia . But he came behind goalkeeper Malcolm Subban only in two games to sporadic minutes. Ultimately, he finished fourth with the team.
