This would mean the end of his active career. Since July 2019, Savard has been the assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues .

Career

Marc Savard began his career in 1993 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals . In his second season he was the top scorer of the league with 139 points in 66 games and was selected in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round at position 91 by the New York Rangers . After he could not complete all games in the following season due to an injury, he won the title of best scorer in the OHL again in the 1996/97 season , this time with 130 points. He was also able to qualify for the final round of the Memorial Cup with Oshawa , but lost in the semifinals.

The 1997/98 season he completed mainly in the AHL with the New York Rangers farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack . There he was able to build on his achievements as a top scorer and scored 74 times in 58 games, which is why he came to 28 games in the National Hockey League . In the 1998/99 NHL season he was finally able to play his way into the Rangers squad and only played a few games for the farm team.

In the summer of 1999 he was transferred to the Calgary Flames , where he played his best NHL season to date with 65 points in 2000/01 . However, he could not achieve great success with the Flames either. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season, the Flames transferred him to the Atlanta Thrashers . There he played very solidly for the rest of the season. In the following season, Savard only played 45 games due to injuries, which is why his 52 points must be assessed higher and he now indicated in the NHL that he is a good scorer.

The 2004/05 NHL season was canceled because of the lockout and Savard completed the season in Switzerland at SC Bern and HC Thurgau . After his return to the NHL for the 2005/06 season , Savard was finally able to show that he can bring the services he had brought in the junior league in the NHL and scored 97 points and was ninth in the league. Together with superstar Jaromír Jágr he was with 69 assists in third place in the NHL.

After the season, he did not renew his contract in Atlanta and moved to the Boston Bruins , where he was able to build on last year's performance at the beginning of the season. It was only in his tenth NHL season that Savard played his first NHL playoffs. With the Bruins he was eliminated in the first round of playoffs after they were defeated by the Canadiens de Montréal in seven games.

On February 8, 2011, the Bruins decided to take Savard after the second concussion within ten months for the remainder of the season from the game. It was only before the start of the 2010/11 season, the striker a seven-year contract with had original Six - Franchise signed. As a result, Savard suffered from the consequences of multiple traumatic brain injuries and did not play another game. However, he was still under contract with the Bruins. The Florida Panthers took over the contractual obligations in July 2015 , when Savard and Reilly Smith were exchanged for Jimmy Hayes . In June 2016, his contract, which ran until the end of the season, switched to the New Jersey Devils , who also received second-round voting rights for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and in return sent Paul Thompson and Graham Black to Florida. In January 2018, Savard also officially announced the end of his active career.

In July 2019, the St. Louis Blues announced that they had signed Savard as Craig Berube's assistant for the following 2019/20 season .
