Justin Faulk (born March 20, 1992 in South St. Paul , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League since September 2019 . The defender previously spent eight years with the Carolina Hurricanes .
Career
Justin Faulk began his career as a hockey player with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active from 2008 to 2010 in the junior leagues of the North American Hockey League and the United States Hockey League . He was then selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as the 37th player by the Carolina Hurricanes . First, however, he attended the University of Minnesota Duluth for a year , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The defender won the 2011 NCAA championship with his university team. He himself was elected to the All-Rookie Team and the third All-Star Team of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . Towards the end of the 2010/11 season he made his professional ice hockey debut for Carolina's farm team Charlotte Checkers from the American Hockey League . In the playoffs he prepared two goals in 13 games.
In the 2011/12 season Faulk was able to earn a regular place with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League . In his rookie year he scored 22 scorer points in 66 games, eight of which were goals. At the same time, he played in another twelve games for the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL.
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Faulk (together with Jordan Staal ) took over the captaincy of the Hurricanes, but handed it over to Justin Williams after one season .
In September 2019, Faulk, whose contract in Carolina had expired in the summer, including a five-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, was handed over to the St. Louis Blues . In return, the Hurricanes Joel Edmundson , Dominik Bokk and a seven-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 . At the same time, Faulk signed a new seven-year contract with the Blues, which should bring him an average annual salary of 6.5 million US dollars.
International
For the USA Faulk took part in the junior division in the U18 World Junior Championship 2010 and the U20 World Junior Championship 2011 . At the U18 World Cup 2010 he and his team won the gold medal, and at the U20 World Cup 2011 the bronze medal. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad for the first time at the 2012 World Cup . At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the bronze medal with it. Faulk was able to repeat this success in 2015 .
