Doug Armstrong (born September 24, 1964 in Sarnia , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey official and since 2010 General Manager of the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League .

Career

Armstrong first studied at Western Michigan University and then received his master's degree in business administration from Florida State University . In 1990 he got his first job with an NHL franchise, the Minnesota North Stars . When the Stars were relocated to Dallas three years later and played there as the Dallas Stars , Armstrong remained in the organization and was promoted to assistant to General Manager Bob Gainey . In 1999 he won the Stanley Cup with the team . Armstrong held this position for nine years before assuming the post of General Manager himself on January 25, 2002. As a result, the stars were able to establish themselves as one of the teams with the highest points in the regular season at the top of the league and made four play-offs . After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 season , Armstrong was sacked after 17 seasons in the Organization of the Stars.

In May 2008 Armstrong was signed by the St. Louis Blues , where he initially worked as Vice President of Player Personnel . After Larry Pleau was fired as General Manager of the Blues in 2010, Armstrong took over his position. The signing of goalkeeper Jaroslav Halák of the Canadiens de Montréal was seen as his first significant transaction in the new office. In November 2011 Armstrong signed the coach Ken Hitchcock . Both led the Blues to the division title in the Central Division in the 2011/12 season . Armstrong was then awarded the NHL General Manager of the Year Award .

At the international level, Doug Armstrong served as general manager of the Canadian national team at the 2009 World Cup and won the silver medal with the team. In 2002 and 2008 he was Assistant General Manager of Team Canada. Armstrong also won gold medals with Canada as a consultant to Steve Yzerman at the 2007 World Cup and as Associate Director of Player Personnel at the 2010 Winter Olympics . He is therefore the only functionary next to Yzerman who would be a member of the Triple Gold Club . He also served as General Manager of Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where the team won the gold medal.

Doug Armstrong is the son of longtime NHL referee and Hockey Hall of Fame member Neil Armstrong .
