James Peter "Jim" Montgomery (born June 30, 1969 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . During his active career he played for the St. Louis Blues , Montréal Canadiens , Philadelphia Flyers , San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Kölner Haie in the German Ice Hockey League and Salawat Julajew Ufa in the Russian Super League . From May 2018 to December 2019, he last served as the head coach of the Dallas Stars in the NHL.
Career
Montgomery first played for four years from 1989 to 1993 at the University of Maine in the Hockey East Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After he had already been appointed to the Second All-Star Team of Hockey East in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons, he was in the 1992/93 season when he won his team with 95 points from 45 games to win the national Championship led, showered with awards, including being named Most Valuable Player of the final championship tournament.

After his last appearances in the NHL for the Dallas Stars, Montgomery went back to Europe for the 2003/04 season. This time he signed a contract with Salawat Julajew Ufa in the Russian Super League . His last stop was in the 2004/05 season, the Missouri River Otters from the United Hockey League , before he ended his active career after 122 NHL games and 34 points.
He then worked as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame in the 2005/06 season before moving to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , also in the role of assistant coach . He was then head coach of the Dubuque Fighting Saints from the United States Hockey League (USHL) between 2010 and 2013 , before he held the same position at the University of Denver from 2013 to 2018 . In May 2018 he was introduced as the new head coach of the Dallas Stars from the NHL, where he succeeded Ken Hitchcock . Montgomery became one of the few coaches who move directly from college to the NHL.
After almost a year and a half with the stars, Montgomery was surprisingly fired in December 2019. Unprofessional conduct was given as the reason, but details were not known for the time being. His successor on an interim basis was his previous assistant, Rick Bowness . For about a month, Montgomery publicly announced that he was suffering from an alcohol addiction and was now receiving addiction medical treatment. He described his release as appropriate and a "wake-up call".
