The University of Maine (also called UMaine ) is a state university near Bangor in the town of Orono in the US state of Maine . With over 11,000 students, it is the principal location of the University of Maine system and the largest university in the state.

General

The university is particularly known for its research and teaching in the fields of nutrition, forestry (wood science), engineering, oceanography , pedagogy and economics.

history

The University of Maine was founded as the Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in 1865 and took its current name in 1897 .

Sports

The UMaine sports teams are the Black Bears . The university is a member of the America East Conference .
