Ben Hutton (born April 20, 1993 in Brockville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League since September 2019 . Prior to that, he spent four years in the Vancouver Canucks organization . With the Canadian national team , the defender won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .
Career
Youth and University
Ben Hutton was born in Brockville and grew up in Prescott, a few miles away . In the youth field, he was active for the Kemptville 73s and for the Nepean Raiders , which are not located in the three highest Canadian junior leagues . In addition, he only switched from attacking to defending position at the age of 16 because the team in this position was short of staff. As a result, he was not considered in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and only selected in the 2012 draft at 147th position by the Vancouver Canucks .
Hutton then enrolled at the University of Maine , began studying economics and then played for their ice hockey team, the Maine Black Bears , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). His breakthrough came there as a sophomore when he scored 15 goals, the most of a defender in the entire NCAA and was subsequently elected to the First All-Star Team of Hockey East .
NHL
After the 2014-15 college season, Hutton signed an entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks. He made his debut a little later with the farm team of the Canucks, the Utica Comets , in the American Hockey League and came there by the end of the season on four missions and one goal. During the preparation for the 2015/16 season, the defender earned a regular place in the NHL line-up and completed 75 games in his rookie season in the National Hockey League (NHL). He led all defenders of the Canucks in assists (24) and scorer points (25).
After his first full season in the professional field, Hutton was appointed to the squad of the Canadian national team, which took part in the 2016 World Cup and won the gold medal with the team.
In November 2016, the Canucks extended his contract, which expired in the summer of 2017, by two years ahead of time, in which he will earn 2.8 million US dollars each - starting with the 2017/18 season. Hutton subsequently fulfilled this, but was unable to agree with the team on an extension in the summer of 2019, so he joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in September 2019 .
