Michael Adrian Kempe (born September 13, 1996 in Kramfors ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League since April 2015 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup . His older brother Mario Kempe is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Kempe played for Kramfors-Alliansen , the club in his hometown , until 2011 . He then moved to Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish capital Stockholm for a year . After appearances in the U16 and U18 teams of the traditional club, Kempe switched to MODO Hockey in May 2012 , where he was also used in the junior teams. In the 2013/14 season , the striker finally made his professional debut in the Svenska Hockeyligan . After he had also spent the 2014/15 season at MODO, the Swede signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings in April 2015 , who had selected him in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in 29th position. As a result, Kempe moved directly to the Manchester Monarchs , the farm team of the Kings from the American Hockey League , and won the Calder Cup in the playoffs . He also started the 2015/16 season with the team, which subsequently traded under the name Ontario Reign .
In the course of the 2016/17 season, Kempe made his debut for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL, before establishing himself in their line-up at the beginning of the following season. In August 2019, he signed a new three-year contract in California for a total salary of six million US dollars.
International
At the international level, Kempe was used in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , which he won with the Swedish team. He also represented his home country in the same year at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2013 and the Ice Hockey World Championship for U18 juniors in Finland in 2014 . At U20 level, he also took part in the 2015 and 2016 World Championships .
For the senior team in Sweden debuted Kempe as part of the 2018 World Cup and it won with the team promptly the gold medal.
