Calvin Louis "Cal" Petersen (born October 19, 1994 in Waterloo , Iowa ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League since July 2017 and for their farm team, the Ontario Reign , is used in the American Hockey League .

Career

Cal Petersen grew up in Waterloo and played in his youth, among others, for two years at the Chicago Young Americans in nearly 400 kilometers away in Chicago . From the 2012/13 season he returned firmly to his hometown, where he joined the Waterloo Black Hawks from the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest-ranking junior league in the country. In his first full season, the goalkeeper recorded a catch rate of 90.6% and an average goal against 2.97, so that he was called to the USHL All-Rookie Team . He was then selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 129th position by the Buffalo Sabers . After another year in Waterloo, where he was elected to the USHL Second All-Star Team , the American moved to college and henceforth played for the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame in Hockey East , a league in the game operation of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

After four shutouts from 33 games in his first season, he was also elected to the all-rookie team of Hockey East. He then significantly increased his personal statistics once again, recording an average of around 2.20 conceded goals and a catch rate of over 92.5% in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. As a result, he was appointed to the Hockey East First All-Star Team in 2017 , while the Buffalo Sabers did not provide him with a contract, so he was able to join the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in July 2017 and sign an entry-level contract there. As expected, the Kings first used the goalkeeper on their farm team , the Ontario Reign , in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he shared the playing time mainly with Jack Campbell and convinced with his performances that he became an AHL All-Star Classic was invited.

After Campbell was out with a knee injury at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Petersen replaced him as the second goalkeeper behind Jonathan Quick in the Kings squad, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in November 2018 and has been there regularly since then comes.

International

Petersen gained his first international experience at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , where he only played the first third of the preliminary round against Slovakia , conceding three goals and then being replaced by goalkeeper Jon Gillies . The World Junior A Challenge 2013 went much better for Petersen, where he led the U19 juniors in his home country to gold medals with three wins in three games. In addition, he was part of the squad of the senior national team for the World Cup in 2017 , but he left the established NHL goalies in Jimmy Howard and Connor Hellebuyck was no use.
