Jonathan Bruce "Jon" Gillies (born January 22, 1994 in Concord , New Hampshire ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League since April 2015 and for their farm team, the Stockton Heat , is used in the American Hockey League .

Career

Jon Gillies was born in Concord and grew up in South Portland , Maine . In his youth, he attended the Salisbury School in Connecticut and ran for their ice hockey team in a regional high school league, before moving to the Indiana Ice in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the 2010/11 season . In the highest ranking junior league in the USA, he initially acted as the second goalkeeper behind Casey DeSmith , before he established himself in the goal of the Ice in the 2011/12 season and was then considered in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at 75th position by the Calgary Flames .

In the fall of 2012, Gillies enrolled at Providence College and participated with their Friars in the game operation of Hockey East , a league within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As a freshman , he recorded six shutouts and a 93.1% catch rate , so that he was named Rookie of the Year by both Hockey East and the entire NCAA . In addition, the American was appointed to the First All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team of Hockey East. Gillies confirmed these statistics over the next two years, with the Friars winning the 2015 NCAA championship as the best college team in the United States. At the final tournament, the Frozen Four , he was also named Most Valuable Player , while Hockey East elected him again to the First All-Star Team and named him Goalkeeper of the Year.

After three years in Providence, Gillies signed an entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL) in April 2014 . They have since used him on their farm team , the Stockton Heat , in the American Hockey League (AHL), while he made his NHL debut for the Flames in April 2017. In the 2017/18 season he was able to increase his playing time in Calgary to eleven games, mainly competing with David Rittich for the position of backup behind Mike Smith .

International

Gillies gained his first international experience at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , where he finished fifth with Team USA . He then represented the U20 national team of his home country at the U20 World Championships in 2013 and 2014 and won the gold medal in 2013.
