history

Until it became independent on March 15, 1895, South Portland belonged to the town of Cape Elizabeth. A shipyard was established in 1940 to build cargo ships for Great Britain. During the Second World War , more than 10% of all Liberty freighters were built here. At peak times, more than 30,000 people were employed there. This decreased sharply after the end of the war.

On July 11, 1944, there was a serious aircraft accident. The US Army pilot, Lt. Phillip Russel landing in control of his Douglas A-26 and crashed into a trailer park on Brick Hill in South Portland. 19 people died and 20 were seriously injured in this accident. 66 years later, a memorial, the Long Creek Air Tragedy Memorial, was erected to commemorate the victims.
