history

Chebeague Island September 2016

The town was founded on July 1, 2007. Previously, the area belonged to the town of Cumberland. The Town Chebeague Island consists of 17 islands and the surrounding water surface. The largest island in the town is Great Chebeague, on it is also the Town Hall.

The islands were already used by Indians thousands of years ago, but not all year round, but in the summer months for fishing. Your name for the island Chebeague means island with many springs in the 18th century, then settlers from Europe followed. Many of the islands of Casco Bay are inhabited all year round, but of the islands that are part of the town, only Great Chebeague and Hope are currently inhabited . Great Chebeague has been permanently farmed since it was settled by European settlers, initially agricultural, now the focus is on marine economy, shipbuilding, fishing and agriculture.

Due to the stability of the economy, Great Chebeague has not developed much in terms of tourism. Tourist infrastructure is widespread on neighboring islands. When Great Chebeague's economy stalled in the 1890s, hotels were built and many houses were converted into holiday homes. This combined with a stronger focus on fishing seemed like the only option to keep the settlement going. Today the maritime economy on the island is of particular importance.

While Chebeague belongs to Cumberland, the islands got an asset-based population. Innovation and ingenuity resulted in an island with good infrastructure that consisted of a school, fire and rescue departments, library, rest homes, assisted living, day care, community hall, church, a historical society and many different institutions necessary to run a small town to maintain, including its own internet provider.

Little Chebeague can be reached on foot from Great Chebeague via a sandbar at low tide , has freshwater springs and streams. It is mostly uninhabited. Before the Second World War there were some summer houses there. A training camp of the Portland Naval Training Center was established on Little Chebeague . It is now listed as an undeveloped park by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, allowing picnic, camping, and swimming but with no facilities provided. Nearby are the islands of Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island.
