Cumberland is located in the middle of Cumberland County in southern Maine and belongs to the metropolitan area Portland - South Portland - Biddeford . The town was spun off from the town of North Yarmouth in 1821 . Ephraim Sturdivant, the city's first treasurer, was chosen by the city council to give the new city its name. He chose the name of the county in which the city is located.

The Cumberland Fair , one of Maine's largest agricultural shows, has been held annually in September in Cumberland since 1868.

On July 1, 2007 Chebeague Island was spun off from the urban area of ​​Cumberlands and founded as a separate city.

Cumberland has had a railway connection since 1848. The main route of the later Grand Trunk Railway runs along the coast through the area of ​​the town, which also had a train station on this route, but is no longer used. A second railroad was built in parallel but a little further inland in 1851 by the Portland and Kennebec Railroad . From 1871 to 1912, the main line to Bangor branched off at their station . The station is still in operation today as a freight station. The last passenger train stopped in 1960 in Cumberland, which was at last only a demand stop.
