Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 20,278 inhabitants in 8469 households on an area of 166.4 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Brunswick has an area of 140.7 km² , of which 121.0 km² consist of land and 19.73 km² of water .
Geographical location
The city is located near the Atlantic coast in the east of Cumberland County and only about 30 km northeast of Portland . To the north, Brunswick borders on Merrymeeting Bay , into which the Kennebec River coming from the north and the Androscoggin River coming from the west flow. In the south there are several bays, all of which belong to Casco Bay . The surface of the area is flat without any significant elevations.

history
In 1628 a settlement was established at the Androscoggin River waterfalls. In 1738 the place received city rights and was named in honor of the House of Braunschweig. Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College and Naval Air Station Brunswick . In several historical city districts there are mansions of the former ship captains, which are predominantly in a Greek neoclassical architectural style. In addition, many buildings in the so-called American federal style of the early 19th century were built. A tree-lined boardwalk connects Bowdoin College with downtown.

traffic
The city is connected to the motorway network by Interstate 295 . US Highway 1 and US Highway 201 also run through the urban area . The Portland – Rockland , Brunswick – Skowhegan and Brunswick – Lewiston railway lines connect the city to the rail network. Passenger transport by rail is offered in the summer months from Brunswick to Rockland with excursion trains. In long-distance traffic there is a daily connection to Portland (Maine) and Boston .
The city had a tram service from 1896 to 1937 , which consisted of overland lines to Bath , Lewiston and Portland . The Androscoggin River , which flows through Brunswick, is not navigable.
