The Ruhr Olympiad is a regional sports competition. Every year the best young athletes from up to 17 cities and four districts of the Ruhr area and the Rheinschiene meet to compete in a city comparison and in the competition for the title of the Ruhr Olympiad winners. It is considered the largest regional youth sports event in Europe.

The Ruhr Olympiad goes back to an initiative of the Stadtsportbund Bochum. In the early 1970s, the competitions were held in 22 sports. From 1980 the competition was officially called the "Ruhr Olympiad".

In 2010 the event took place in Duisburg , where 9,000 active participants took part from May 29th to June 6th.
