history

Richmond Island was toured by Samuel de Champlain around 1605 . John Smith explored and mapped the area on his New England expedition in 1615. Charles I , to whom he presented the map, chose the place name after his sister Elisabeth Stuart .

The first settlement was by Walter Bagnall, who set up a trading post on Richmond Island in 1628. His deceitful methods aroused the anger of the Indians who killed him in October 1631 and burned his home.

Two months later, the Plymouth Company left Richmond Island to the traders Robert Trelawney and Moses Goodyear, who set up a fishing business there. The first settlers on the mainland, George Cleeve and Richard Tucker, settled in 1630. Two years later, the English parliamentarian Alexander Rigby, who had taken possession of the area, had them expelled. Cleeve and Tucker then moved to what is now Portland .

The Porpooduck settlement , which then emerged on the For River, was attacked in the Indian Wars and finally destroyed in 1703. In 1719/20 a new settlement was built, which received town charter in 1765.

From 1899 to 1962 there was an artillery base called Fort Williams around Portland Head Light , which served to protect the port of Portland and has now been converted into a park.

At least 15 ships were stranded off Cape Elizabeth, including the paddle steamer Bay State in 1916 . About 7 wrecks are still visible under water.
