Harpswell is a town in Cumberland County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 4,740 inhabitants in 4208 households on an area of 330.7 km².

Geographical location
Harpswell is the southeasternmost town in Cumberland County and is located on a southwest-facing peninsula in Casco Bay in the Atlantic Ocean . The peninsula is bordered by other parallel islands on each side. Harpswell Harbor is on the east side and Middle Bay is on the west side.

The town of Harpswell extends over several islands, the larger islands are: Bailey Island (Bailey's Island), Birch Island, Dingley Island, Haskell Island (once called Damariscove Island), Long Island, Lower Goose Island, Orrs Island (Orr's Island), Ragged Island, Sebascodegan Island (Sebascodiggan Island), Upper Goose Island, Whaleboat Island and Yarmouth Island.

history
Originally the area was settled by Indians from the Abenaki tribe. Their name for this area was Merriconeag and their name for Great Island was Erascohegan and Sebascodiggin, respectively . In 1869, Nicholas Shapleigh bought the island from the Abenaki. Since attacks by the Abenaki took place, settlement could only take place after the end of the Silly War . Originally part of the town of North Yarmouth , Harpswell was founded by the Massachusetts General Court in 1758 and named after Harpswell in Lincolnshire . The Harpswell industries include agriculture, shipbuilding, but above all fishing. Harpswell is also popular with artists and tourists.
Harriet Beecher Stowe spent many months of the summer on the islands of Harpswell. She made the middle one the setting for her story The Pearl of Orr's Island .

There are no medical facilities at Harpswell. There are hospitals in Brunswick, Freeport and Bath.
Harpswell has two public libraries. The Cundy's Harbor Library is located on Sebascodegan Island in Harpswell and the Orr's Island Library is located on Orr Island in Harpswell.
