history

Steep Falls Library (2014)

Standish was granted as a grant to Capitain Humphrey Hobbs and Moses Pearson and their men in 1750 for services in the siege of Louisburg. A total of 120 grants were given to the 120 men who had served in the two companies. Of these, 60 were to be settled within three years and the other 60 were to be settled within seven years. Loans were given to the provincial treasurer with a promise that every man would have a house that was 4.9 meters (16 ft ) by 5.9 meters (18 ft) by a 2.1 meter (7 ft) tall Shed would build on 5 acres of land. Settlement began in 1760, but not by the men who received the grants. They sold these on to other settlers. The settlement area was called Pearson and Hobbs Town . The town was founded on November 30, 1785 and named after Miles Standish .

In the early days of the settlement, the Abenaki often destroyed the houses and tried to evict the settlers from this, their land. After the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony could not offer the settlers any help, they provided armed guards themselves and built a fortress with their own resources.

Standish is located in a sandy area that was overgrown with pine trees and later became good farmland. There were water mills for the timber industry, for the production of barrel staves, carriages, clothes and flour. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened in 1832 to improve trade between Standish and Portland. It was followed by the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway which began operating in 1870. Since then, tourism has also been part of Standish. Today Standish is a recreational area for the Portland catchment area.
